Rasputin is a name that has gone down in legend; a sexual deviant, a mystic, a self-proclaimed holy man with powers of healing, a mysterious figure who moved in the shadows yet wielded extraordinary influence in the highest of circles.
So what is the truth lying behind those hooded eyes and thick beard? Who was the real Rasputin? This documentary explores his journey, beginning with a childhood in a poor Siberian peasant village and going right through to his position of power at the Tsar’s palace.
The voices of many of his contemporaries, his followers, friends, lovers and enemies, speak over lifelike re-creations of the palaces and peasants of Rasputin’s world. These first hand accounts, coupled with haunting music and cinematic shots, lead the viewer into a true cinematic experience of what really drove Rasputin and how he assumed the position and powers he held.
The Real Rasputin also features interviews with modern counterparts, similar figures in the present day, to show how just one person can grow to command such influence over others.
