The Persian Empire was one of the world’s largest and most prolific empires of all time and it was ruled by six different dynasties from 550 BC to 1925 AD. The core of the Persian Empire was modern-day Iran.
It was during the First Persian Empire, also known as the Achaemenid Empire, that the ancient city of Persepolis was built. A place of great historical and cultural significance that was the ceremonial capital of the empire and known as the richest city under the sun during its period until Alexander the Great looted and burned it down in 330 BC. Today, only the ruins of Persepolis remain and they’re considered a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO.
