The story of Dominique Lanoise is about obesity, and in particular, extreme cases of obesity. It shows the predicament that the affected people face. In addition to that, they show the factors that lead to such conditions, some caused by the affected person, and others beyond one’s control.
Condition
Dominique Lanoise was a 625-pund woman who had an insatiable desire for her favorite food. The word on the street was “she ate herself to death.” At some time, she was too fat that she would not get the right size of the clothes to wear. Dominique Lanoise stated that she was once skinny, but after giving birth, she would no longer control her weight.
Her condition meant that she would not travel using the regular transport. For instance, she would not travel from Haiti to the US using commercial airlines, but rather, he was transported with a military cargo plane.
Dominique Lanoise was prescribed the diet she was supposed to follow. Instead of following the diet strictly, she cheated, and admitted to doing this as much. Dominique Lanoise also stated that even though she would eat healthy food, she would sprinkle the food with powder in order to prevent future cravings, and this was the genesis of her undoing.
Dominique Lanoise would lose some weight, but her daughters were frustrated when her behavior translated to gaining weight. It is not clear how she would get more food other than the amount allowed by the doctor. It is believed that friends and neighbors would sneak food to her.
The doctors had proposed to her and the family that they would do a stomach surgery in order to save her life, but she died before this was done. The goal of this planned procedure was to reduce her stomach by 90 %.
Frustrated, Dr. Oscar Hernandez stated that her client was assassinating the weight loss program. Indeed, Dominique Lanoise died just as the doctor had predicted.
