Documentarty: why Machines That Bend Are bettar
Duration: 12min
this documentary made by Veritasium, that dissolves the myth of machines that bend and explains why compliant mechanisms have broad practical usage. In the beginning, professor Larry Howell shows Derek Muller, the leader of Veritasium team his gripper which is the first form of compliant mechanism he ever designed. After analyzing that model, Derek explains to the viewer how he will divide the advantages compliant mechanisms have over traditional ones in 8 different segments. The first advantage is design simplicity which leads to more freedom in production and costs less money, those being the second and third advantage.
Compliant Mechanisms Design
Moving forward, they analyze an elephant-looking model which leads to Derek concluding that compliant mechanisms have more precise motion and better performance than their traditional counterparts, the fourth and fifth advantage. Sixth and seventh advantage are unveiled when Derek explains how their variation in proportion and portability are extremely useful. In the end, Larry demonstrates the ability of a titanium contraption to fully bend which makes Derek conclude that the predictability of machines that bend ultimately makes them more practically useful, with that being the eighth and final advantage.
